MY SKINCARE ESSENTIALS

Growing up, I had always been that girl at school that never really broke out in teenage acne. I might have had a few whoppers here and there but nothing too serious. I saw what some of my peers went through and I was so glad I didn’t have to go through that. For the reason that I had quite good skin, I didn’t use anything special on my face. I just used to wash my face with my usual african sponge and body soap. Little did I know that my easy skin was about to do a complete 180. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was working at ASOS at the time and it was the day before my 23rd birthday that I completely broke out in raging spots on both sides of my cheeks. I was absolutely horrified. I had a big birthday dinner planned, outfit and hairstyle at the ready and my skin had ruined it all. I was so traumatised by the outbreak I didn’t even want to go out anymore, but if I remember correctly, I grabbed some sort of spot face wash and some foundation and just covered it. From this point onwards I would be engaged in an ongoing battle with my skin. Sometimes it would calm down and other times it would completely flare up but it never completely went away. 

This little merry go round came to an end when I made friends with a girl called Bukky.

At a sleep over one time, I was telling her about my skin woes and she testified that she had gone through pretty much the same onslaught, but that a skincare range from Body Shop had changed the situation. She even showed me pictures from before she started using it to convince my skeptical self that it had worked. By this time I had tried many things which to me had all but failed. Anyway, what did I have to lose?

At my earliest convenience, I popped to the Body Shop and bought the two products she had recommended. The Vitamin E Cleanser and Toner and if I remember correctly I also bought the moisturizer and eye cream for my dark circles. I begin using it day and night, washing my face with the cleanser, after about ten minutes of having it on my face, using the toner on a cotton pad and then following up with the moisturizer. 

I kid you not, in a matter of days I could see and feel the difference. I didn’t tell the guy I was seeing at the time, my husband now, that I was using anything but I remember in that same week he mentioned that my skin looked really smooth. I was elated! I literally felt like I was on cloud nine. 

I’m not even trying to blow my own trumpet here, but people regularly comment that my skin looks lovely and believe I’m wearing foundation when I’m not. 

So this is why I felt compelled to speak about skincare and a good skincare regimen. Right now I feel like women have gone make-up crazy, and to be honest there’s nothing wrong with a bit of foundation, highlight and contour here and there but I really feel its more important to take care of your actual face than the mask. What is the point of having seemingly flawless skin when your face underneath is a mess?

I’m sure we can all testify to seeing those impeccable MUA’s on youtube, that when they remove the make up we all gasp in shock [no shade]

I know that every product works differently for different people, but I believe that once you find what works for you the method is the same. 

In my photo, I have the Body Shop Cleanser and Toner. The Body Shop Seaweed Exfoliator [The Vitamin E version was discontinued but the seaweed one is just as good] Some Coconut Oil and Vitamin E oil. Lastly I have a Body Shop Muslin Cloth which I also bought because my african sponge went missing. LOL

Anyway, I replaced my Vitamin E moisturizer with Coconut Oil and pure Vitamin E because I didn’t see the point in using a moisturizer with Vitamin E in it rather than using the precious oil in it’s pure form.

Let’s look very briefly at some of the properties of both oils. I’ll paste the website link below.

Coconut Oil:

Saturated Fats: Predominantly, these saturated fats are medium chain fatty acids or triglycerides. When applied on the skin, they keep it smooth to the touch. Due to the presence of these fats, coconut oil also retains the moisture content of the skin, as the fats eliminate moisture loss through the pores on skin. When ingested through the regular consumption of coconut oil, these fats deposit under the skin, thus keeping it healthy and smooth, giving it an even tone and reducing the appearance of the pores.

Capric /Caprylic/Lauric acid: These are not very different from the medium chain fatty acids, but it is still important to mention them separately here, since they have their own contributions. These three fatty acidshave strong disinfectant and antimicrobial properties. As a result, when applied on the skin, coconut oil protects from microbial infections that can get into open wounds or even enter the body through the pores. This microbial action can be experienced even if coconut oil is taken internally, as the fatty acids boost the immunity when converted to monocaprins and monolaurins.

Vitamin-E: The contributions of vitamin-E towards skin care are well known. It is essential for healthy skin growth, repair of wear & tear on the skin, keeping skin smooth and protecting against cracking. Above all, it prevents premature aging and wrinkling of the skin, since it has good antioxidant properties. 100 grams of coconut oil has about 0.1 mg of vitamin E, thus enhancing it skin-nourishing properties.

As you can see these oils are a huge factor in a healthy skincare regimen.

So step by step this is what I do:

1. Apply a 10p size portion of the Vitamin E cleanser to your face without wetting first. Rubbing it all over your face in circles.

2. Take the body shop scrub cloth and apply it to the face with the cream on and gently exfoliate the skin in circles – be careful to avoid the eye area as this skin is sensitive. This method removes impurities and any dead skin

3. Rinse with warm water, then PAT dry with a clean towel

4. Apply the toner to a cotton pad and again rub into the skin in circular motions

5. Once dried, apply a small amount of Coconut Oil by rubbing into your hands to melt and PAT into the skin

6. Lastly, take a tiny amount of Vitamin E oil on the pads of your index fingers and pat around the eye area

If I have had make-up on my face, I use the seaweed exfoliator using the same method as the cleanser but before the toner

VOILA

It is sooo simple. As I said earlier, the Body Shop products may not work for you, but experiment, and when you find something that does work the method is the same. 

Although this is my regular regimen I’ve changed it slightly using just the Vitamin E oil on my face and around my eyes to rid myself of my dark circles and patches. I’ve called it the Vitamin E challenge and I’ll be doing it for 30 days with before and after shots to see the difference. I want to make sure it works before I recommend it but in the meantime, try out my regimen and make it a priority before make-up and lashes to take care of your beautiful skin – it deserves it!
